Los Bilbilicos: a Memorial Garden

One of my favourite singers is Judy Frankel, who died of cancer in March 2008. May her memory be for a blessing.

I created this garden in her memory. It is in Shipley, one of the original 13 sims, and has terraforming to + and – 40 m which was particularly important to me. I wanted to make a  hidden valley of calm and beauty. Although it is to honour one inspiring woman, it is there for anyone who wants to meditate, pray, or have a quiet moment, particularly those who have lost loved ones to cancer.

The name of the parcel means “the nightingales” in Ladino, the language of Sephardic Jews, whose songs Frankel did so much to preserve. The birdsong you can hear is that of the nightingale. Los Bilbilicos is the first Sephardic song Frankel heard: Los bilbilicos cantan/ N’el árvol de la flor. [The nightingales are singing/ In the flowering trees.]

As of 8 February 2009, the garden is located in Seogwipo.
